happy weekend

Little by little we get closer to spring. I think with all of the bad weather on the east coast we're all pretty much counting the days til then. I leave you with great weekend wishes and a little visual + sparkle of Bright Spring Wedding Colors with this San Diego Wedding Insider lovely I created. Til Monday.

a bottle as art

Today, a little 'bottle' inspiration. I've been known to pay more for a beverage due to the design of its bottle...what can I say, I'm a visual person and well designed objects call to me.

Would totally pay more than $5 for these babies...hey, they're collectibles!

a fine pair

I've been wearing glasses since I can remember; I actually like it (that's not me above, though :)p ). Especially now that you can find them in such stylish designs and a lot of different colors.

la chelly cumple treinta...the decor

Good morning everybody. Wow, three morning posts in a row. Lets hope I can keep this up!

In keeping with last weeks post regarding my 30th Birthday celebration, today I'll share with you some of the cool decor pieces I created to ambient the event. The 'Mexico' headline pictured above I found in a magazine and it set the tone for the vibrant colors of the event.

In keeping with the Mexican-themed party, I wanted to create a Papel Picado garland to stream across the room, but update it a bit with some modern geometric shapes for the cut-outs as well as for the banner itself. I used a triangular shape for the banners, very typical of the fun garlands you see in decor these days.

I started out by stapling together a large stack of tissue paper in various bright colors. Then I sketched out the triangular shapes for the banners and let loose on sketching out different designs...

...which I would then cut out.

I cut out a '30' on some...

...and an 'L' (my initial) on others. Mostly I drew simple shapes that would be easy to cut out with the Exacto.

My mom helped me string all of the banners together to form the garland, it took a while, but the end result was fantastic! Everyone was surprised to find out that I had actually cut every single one by hand.

Some of the other elements I used to decorate the venue were candles inspired by Mexican Saint candles which I wrapped in vellum...

...with various design motifs I created and printed out.

As well as tissue paper Pom Poms which I kept flat on one side to be able to stick on the walls rather than hanging them from the ceiling.

rob ryan

Good morning all. I've posted a little something from Rob Ryan's work before...for Valentine's weekend, and I promised I'd post a little something else. Here's a sneak into a very minimal part of his work...I love it!!

Ahhh, doesn't it seem from what I've posted so far that he's a very mushy and romantic guy?! :)P

ximena sariñana

Good morning all...my first morning post (although that was my initial plan from the beginning). I'd like to say that i'll be posting more frequently in the mornings, but alas, I am a busy lady and the nights seem to be more my companion.

Any who, this weekend was supposed to be filled with LizzyB work, amongst that was website/portfolio build out and business card re-design, but as it many times happens, I detoured through the internet and found myself browsing on YouTube for many hours. This all started after watching a Mexican movie, Niñas Mal, with a very talented Ximena Sariñana. I knew this young lady started out as an actress in Mexican Telenovelas, and into her adolescence co-starred in films such as Hasta Morir, Todo El Poder, and Amar Te Duele, but I vaguely remember her being a singer, and a very talented one at that. Well, she sang the final song in the movie I watched and her voice seemed very familiar, so I began researching a little more. What I found was very surprising since I had heard some of her songs before, I just hadn't realized it was her.

happy weekend... it's almost spring

It's been in the 70s the past few days, which reminds me of Spring (just around the corner, 4 1/2 weeks to go, yey!), and it puts me in the mood for a picnic. Especially with these lovely, picnic-y items.

Yes, it's Thursday, but I'm leaving you today with an early weekend wish. May you have a chance to enjoy the wonderful weather (if you're in the west coast), but if you must stay indoors have a picnic inside! :)

Happy Weekend.

la chelly cumple treinta...an invitation

I started this blog a month ago, just a few days after celebrating my 30th birthday, and I've been promising to post images of the invitation and decoration I designed for the event since then. Well, I've finally gotten around to preparing the images. Enjoy!

First, a little about the theme: being of Mexican heritage I wanted to celebrate my 'doble-quinceaños' (double fifteen- 30th) with a large celebration, so a typical Mexican 'pachanga' (party) was a must. I wanted to use typical Mexican decor, but with a modern twist, so of course there had to be Papel Picado, Piñatas, colorful streamers & tableware all with Mexican-inspired motifs. I spent many hours researching for the invitation, not necessarily all Mexican design, though, and this is what I kept close as I designed.

I started out by loosely sketching out a few different comps for the motifs and placement of the text. I then went into Illustrator and cleaned up the design and elaborated the various elements. I initially had a very complex design, but when I started to cut each section out by hand (I had to cut out each invite individually rather than in stacks of multiple sheets because the paper was thicker than the usual tissue used in Papel Picado) I knew the design had to be simplified.

I still kept with some of the floral motifs and scalloped edges found in the traditional designs, but I printed out the text rather than cutting it out due to time constraints. For the envelope I used craft paper and printed a motif that would accentuate the designs on the other pieces.

I chose to use three banners to create a complete Papel Picado garland and placed the necessary information on each. The introduction, the pertinent information such as time, place, and what's going on, and the map.

I had a great response from my invitees about the design. I'm glad they enjoyed receiving it as much as I enjoyed creating it. At the end, I might have had blisters on my fingers from all the cutting with the Exacto, but that's just proof of the time and effort I put into creating them. :) Thanks to my love Gabriel, soriameza.com, for his insightful collaboration.

Stay tuned for pix of the party decor: Papel Picado garland, colorful Pom Poms, and saint-style Decorative Candles. Here's a sneak peek!

a cut above the rest

I found the most incredible prints a while back based on original Famille Summerbelle hand paper cut outs (HAND CUT!). This one is a stylized map of Paris, with all of its arrondissements and familiar places; on my wish list, of course.

There's also one created for New York City, another of my favorite cities, and for London, and they all have such attention to detail and whimsy. For insight as to how these cut-outs are created visit the Famille Summerbelle blog for a short video of the process. You'll surely be shaking your head in awe as I was.

happy weekend + valentine's

Friday, Friday, Friday...my second favorite day of the week. I'm sending you off into the weekend with this awesome screenprint of one of Rob Ryan's fabulous lasercut creations...ahhh, so sweet! Perfect for this Valentine's Weekend.

I'll have more of Rob Ryan's incredible work next week. His creations are so elaborate and full of whimsy it makes me tingle all over.

drinking water in style

As a self-declared francophile I must say I love anything French, particularly anything Parisian. So when I came across these stylish water carafes via one of my favorite blogs, Prêt à Voyager, I new I must have them all.

You must read Anne's post on Parisians and drinking water, very interesting (hadn't really thought about it before), then you'll understand why all of these uniquely-designed water carafe's came to be.

dan, dan, dan

Now, I know I say this word A LOT...it's obvious, but I LOVE Dan Funderburgh's work.

Being a pattern designer myself, I have a high appreciation for anyone who can create such detailed work as he does.

Every single design is so unique and elaborate, and there's always a quirky-ness to all.

recuerdos y tequila

Music is as much a part of my life as design is. Although I don't play an instrument (not that I've never wanted to learn, I've had my share of piano lessons), I have a great respect for musicians and their compositions. And I'm a lover of all types of music...being with a musician for more than ten years now really opened the doors to a great array of genres.

Just yesterday I came upon a very eclectic album by someone I wasn't familiar with at all, a singer/songwriter named Elan from Guadalajara, Mexico. As I work from my desk on various projects I like keeping the t.v. on with minimal sound, and as I quickly glanced from the corner of my eye I was taken in by a very short haired Elan on the screen. She just seemed humble and authentic.

unique weddings galore

I've spent all day immersed in the wonderful world of Weddings preparing this week's San Diego Wedding Insider Get Creative section, where we're featuring unique wedding ideas for Your True Bridal Style.

house cleaning

H ello everyone, Happy Monday!
Well, in an effort to create a more organized and scheduled blog, and so you know what to expect (subject-wise) each day, I've defined my categories to the right. Hopefully, this will make it easier to search for inspirations and creative ideas.
A brief description of each:
{1} a lizzyb gift - downloadable freebies designed by me
{2} i covet thee - things I'm liking and that I want, ranging from home decor, fashion, travel stuff
{3} lizzyb + loves = - anything and everything I am loving at the moment (or forever), ranging from design, food, music, film, architecture, photography, fashion, travel
{4} visual + sparkle = - inspiring image boards, visual beauties of every kind
{5} on the tele - anything having to do with television
{6} the bottom drawer - anything not necessarily falling into the above categories, but still worth a read.

I hope you're liking my blog so far! Post a comment if you do, :). Bare with me, I'm still in the beginning stages and will be posting about my LizzyB Loves designs very soon: invitation design, stationery, gift wrap, decor, and the process and inspirations involved in each. Also, I'm currently working on finalizing my online portfolio and website, so forgive the 'Coming Soon' on the site, :)P. I'll give you a sneak peak soon, I promise!

Here's to a great week!

a quince invitation

I've just been commissioned to design a Quinceañera invitation for a young lady who has no idea what she wants or likes, so in trying to make her decision much easier I created this visual + sparkle full of varying designs.

There aren't very many Quinceañera invitation design studios out there so that's why I've used all Wedding invitations as samples. All these are so pretty and diverse it was hard to narrow down my selection.

Looking for a Quinceañera invitation designer? Send me an email...I'm your gal!

color in the kitchen

I dream about the day I can have my own kitchen full of colorful dishes and serving trays. I love collecting them although I don't have a place to store them now, but you can't imagine the rush I get when I come across the perfect find at a flee market or discount store.

I came across this image of talented stylist and designer Raina Kattelson's home through Design*Sponge, and I just love the colorful array of dishes in all shapes and sizes. What I'd give to have them all...
